Street Car of the Day: 1/25/2008

Only 11 more months of Christmas Shopping left!  You can use my "Street Car of the Day" or even the "Race Car of the Day" blog entries as a shopping guide for the ones you love.  Hopefully I'll make SOMEONE's list this year. :D

The Race Car of the Day blog idea was such a HUGE success yesterday (9 people read it.  No-one commented) that I thought I'd add in a street car of the day blog entry too.  We'll see how this goes.

The choice for today is a BMW 1600 from the late 60s.  Most of the time I realy don't like old cars that are updated with some modern stuff in them, but this thing could be my ideal daily driver.  Obviously this owner has put in a ton of work on this car.  It is pretty dang cool.

This Austin Mini Cooper may be one of the best that I've seen in a long time.  It freaking rocks!!!  Some might be tempted to put this under "Race car of the day" but not me.  That thing has daily driver written all over it!!!!

If you're looking at this blog entry and the links no longer work, that is because they're links to e-bay auctions.  These entries are definitely "You snooze and you lose" in nature.

See you later.

Pete

LOVE that 1600! I've always wanted a 2002tii (a neighbor had one in the 70's and I always thought it was a cool car) but I could really see myself driving that 1600 as my weekend machine. The old coopers are neat too, but I'd have to stick to the old bimmers

I've got a 75 2002 that I'm building into a race car. It should be fun when it is done. I'm enjoying the building process for now though work has kept me from doing too much wtih it.

Later!

Ah! I'm more of a street guy myself. You thinking of tracking it at Summit Point? Bill Baker from the old shop used to track his GTI out there. It was a pretty neat little 8v. Had the coolest sounding supertrap on it. Did you know Bill very well? I lost touch with him years ago, but was friends with him in the early 90's. Anywho, looking forward to the next installation, and looking forward to the built pix of the new Niner (Hint, Hint... don't make me go digging around in here!)

Hey Bob. I do remember Bill Baker and his GTI. I did not know him well.

Most likely my 2002 will be for autocross and an occasional track day. There is a ton of work to be done on it. I've stripped the interior and started gutting it. It was a rust-infested freebie that I got from a guy that had used it as a lawn ornament for 5 years. Its previous owner had done the same for almost that long. You can gawk at porn through the holes in the floor.

The RIP9 is nothing really to look at. It is a scrapped-together build of hodge podge parts. It works extremely well and I have no complaints. The frame is awesome, but the fork (reba 29er) is worn out and needs to be replaced, the brakes (xtr) are barely adequate, the cranks are too long (off of an old Single Speed build) and the wheels don't match. They work fine, but don't match.

Once I get it sorted out, I'll take some pictures of it and post the build.

I love the frame though. It is almost enough to get me off the single speed on a weekly basis.

Actually I've been on the old road bike more than anything. I'd forgotten how awesome that 18 year old Tesch rides. I built new wheels for it using some old King hubs and it is a freaking dream.

Catch up with you soon.
